Vioxx Side EffectsVioxx (generic name rofecoxib) is from a class of drugs that are known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It's typically prescribed to help reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and certain forms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis; to manage acute pain in adults; to treat migraines; and to treat menstrual pain. It works by reducing substances that cause inflammation, pain, and fever in the body.Important Vioxx Announcement As of 30 September 2004, Vioxx was voluntarily recalled worldwide by Merck & Co Inc. (its manufacturer). The decision to recall Vioxx stemmed from new data where a clinical trial found an increased risk of heart attack and stroke in patients taking Vioxx. According to Merck, data from the trial showed the increased risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular complications began 18 months after patients started taking Vioxx. The data came from a three-year study aimed at showing that Vioxx at a (25 milligram dose) prevents recurrence of polyps in the colon and rectum. The trial was stopped after Merck discovered the higher heart risk compared to patients taking dummy pills.
