Xenical Side Effects
Xenical's main active ingredient is Orlistat, and it was approved
by the FDA in 1999 for use by certain obese individuals to help them lose
weight and maintain this weight loss.
Common Xenical Side Effects
Rectal discomfort or pain, respiratory tract infections, abdominal discomfort
or pain, anxiety, muscle pain, nausea, arthritis, back pain, diarrhea, dizziness,
earache, fatigue, fatty or oily stools, fecal urgency or incontinence, flu,
gas with fecal discharge, gum problems, headache, increased defecation, menstrual
problems, oily discharge, skin rash, sleep problems, tooth problems, urinary
tract infections, vaginal inflammation, vomiting. Xenical side effects are
more common during the first year of treatment.
It is quite possible for side effects other than those listed here to occur.
If this happens and/or if any seem particularly strange or bothersome, contact
a healthcare provider.
Special Xenical Precautions
Along with dietary fat, Xenical also decreases the absorption of some fat-soluble
vitamins and beta-carotene. To compensate for this, patients using Xenical
should take a multivitamin containing vitamins A, E, D, and K once a day,
at least two hours before or two hours after taking Xenical.
Side effects such as diarrhea and abdominal pain may be made worse if the
Xenical patient maintains a high-fat diet or even takes a high-fat meal. Xenical
users should definitely limit their fat intake.
Xenical use increases the likelihood of kidney stones. Thus, Xenical patients
should use it with caution if they have had a history of this problem.
If Xenical is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could
be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important for a Xenical
patient to check with their healthcare provider before combining Xenical with
the following drugs - Cyclosporine (Neoral and Sandimmune) and Warfarin (Coumadin).
The effects of Xenical during pregnancy have not been fully studied and so
it is not recommended for pregnant women. Xenical patients who are pregnant
or plan to become pregnant, should inform their healthcare provider immediately.
